Skin health is directly related to the following factors:

  • Diet
  • Lifestyle habits
  • Age
  • Hormonal balance
  • Cumulative damage from sun, harsh weather and personal abuse to the skin

Taking these factors into consideration, supportive treatments are designed. These factors directly impact the thickness, elasticity and healing capabilities of the skin.

Aging and the Development of Wrinkles

The skin consists of three different layers – Epidermis, Dermis and Subcutaneous tissue.

  • Epidermis – outermost layer

The Epidermis acts as a protective barrier. It is composed of cells called keratinocytes who produce keratin. Keratin is the structural protein that gives the skin its durable exterior. With age the epidermis thins increasing the likelihood of skin dehydration. Thin dry skin makes the skin more susceptible to mechanical damage and sun damage.

  • Dermis – middle layer

The Dermis contains the structural proteins collagen and elastin, which provides skin strength, firmness and shape. Increasing the natural production of collagen and elastin in the dermis should be the central goal of any anti-aging skin treatment.

It is an unfortunate fact that cell division and repair within the skin slows with age, as well as, the production of collagen and elastin fibers. Skin sagging and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles occurs as a result.

  • Subcutaneous tissue – bottom layer

Subcutaneous tissue is comprised of fat cells that help to insulate the body and maintain skin volume. Fat cells shrink with age causing skin to lose its tone and fullness.

In summary, wrinkles form with age as the result of the summation of the following:

  • Loss of skin protection and moisture in the dermis
  • Decreased strength and flexibility in the epidermis
  • Reduced volume and tone in the subcutaneous tissue

Goal of treatment

In understanding the changes that occur in the skin creating wrinkles, the skin can be manipulated in order to maximize its efficiency and treat and prevent wrinkles. The production of structural proteins such as collagen and elastin can be naturally amplified, without the injection of synthetic fillers. The use of customized serums, acupuncture and skin micro-needling devices help increase cell turnover and repair.

Scars and Cellulite

Although the cause of scars and cellulite may differ, their affect on the connective tissue and skin is analogous.

Scars develop in response to an inappropriate healing process following an injury to the skin. The injury may be the result of acne, burns, personal injury or surgery. Depending on the size and type of scar, resurfacing the skin to diminish the size of the scar and improve skin tone is the goal of treatment.

Cellulite refers to the dimpled appearance of the skin, often found on the hips, thighs and/or buttocks. The skin appears dimpled or lumpy as a result of fat deposits pushing on and distorting the connective tissue. Treatments focus on repairing the connective tissue, especially elastin fibers.

The occurrence of cellulite is much more common in women in comparison to men, as a result of the different distribution of fat, muscle and connective tissue. Hormones play a large role in the development of fat deposits. Utilizing natural means of regulating hormones is an essential part of treatment. The common misconception is that stretch marks are solely due to changes in weight
